A timely schedule shift; time for the brand-spanking-new Penguin Cafe album – Rain Before Seven.... You could call this a 'return to roots' album of sorts, as apparently in search of optimism in the pandemic days, the music reflects more on the playful and cheerful side of Jeffes' compositions. And by that I mean whereas the last couple of Penguin Cafe albums felt a lot more – in the lack of a better word – cinematic and atmosphere-building, Rain Before Seven... is closer to Penguin Cafe Orchestra.
I'm good either way, I enjoy both – and even more I enjoy listening to talented composers like Jeffes do their thing.
The album is available via Erased Tapes Records, in almost all the formats under the sun besides C-tapes. As a side note, I really appreciate that Erased Tapes' digital releases - which are bundled in with physical versions – also come as uncompressed WAVs.
